Today, owner Phil Knight is actively involved in supporting the University of Oregon and has contributed to many campus buildings. Most recently, the $200 million, state-of-the-art renovation of Hayward Field.

Eugene’s official slogan is “A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors”. It is also Oregon’s second-largest metropolitan area and home to the University of Oregon.

However, Eugene has also acquired other well-known nicknames such as “Emerald City”, due to its lush green forests, as well as “Track Town, USA” and “Silicon Shire”. 

Eugene earned the nickname “Track Town, USA” due to its rich history as a runner’s paradise, an epicenter for track and field, and of course, famous Hayward Field and Nike.

Other nicknames include “Silicon Shire”, for leaders in the ever-growing Northwest tech industry, and “Home of the Ducks”, for sports fans and women’s basketball.

The Simpsons

There’s almost no doubt that the nearby town of Springfield, Oregon, serves as the primary basis for the beloved cartoon city from The Simpsons. However, if you still have any, just watch the series and you will find multiple places and landmarks in the show that are inspired by Eugene and Springfield.
